It’s an interesting spot for boaters to observe, but caution is required when navigating these waters and should only be navigated by experienced operators. Boat rentals are not permitted to navigate these waters.
Portsea: Portsea is located at the tip of the Mornington Peninsula and is known for its mansions and keep your eye out for the Rich and Famous. During the summer months you can enjoy the lawns of the Portsea Pub and stroll the main strip. Try snorkeling or scuba diving around the
Portsea pier where you will see Sea Dragons and rays. If you are more adventures and have the diving skills, you can check out the outlying reefs and wrecks like HMAS Canberra.
Mud Islands: The Mud Islands are located towards the heads of the bay and are only accessible by boat. You can swim and snorkel around the islands where you will see a range of fish marine habitat. The water is slightly warmer around the islands providing the perfect place for Bronze whalers to give birth. You can stroll around the islands but be mindful that you can’t park up on the island and will need to swim or wade in.

Murray River – Echuca
The Murray River is Australia’s longest river stretching an impressive 2,508 kilometers and separates Victoria from New South Wales. Echuca and bordering town Moama (on the NSW side) is only 2.5 hours from Melbourne making it one of the preferred summer holiday locations.
The Murray River is the lifeblood of Echuca, and it offers a range of recreational activities. The river is a perfect place to undertake all types of water activities including Waterskiing, Wakeboarding, Jetsking, kayaking, Paddleboarding and Fishing. If you don’t have a boat you can still go Fishing & Swimming or simply enjoy a leisurely riverside picnic. The river provides a scenic backdrop for the town and a tranquil escape into nature.
You can take your boat for a cruise past the paddle steamers docked at the Port or find a spot to dock and visit one of the many restaurants along the water. Viewing the working paddles steamers as they steam along the river is a sight to behold especially when you are up close and personal in your boat.
During the Summer months the population of just over 15,000 swells dramatically. The river around Echuca can become quite hectic and you will need your wits about you. Remember your boat rules and that you are operating under the New South Wales Maritime law.
If you are looking for a place to fish from your boat along the Murray River – Echuca then head East til you come to the Murray Goulburn River Junction. This area is a great spot to find Yellow Belly and in the deep gutters you will find your Murray Cod. If you head West to the mouth of the Campaspe River you will find Red Fin and Murray cod hiding in the depths. There is a large supply of Carp throughout the river system also. Be sure to take plenty of tackle as there are lots of snags in this river.

The Yarra River
They say cities have souls, but how often do you get to sail right through one? Enter: The Yarra River. Skyscrapers on one side, lush green parks on the other, and you. Slicing through the waters, right in the midst of it all.
One moment, you’re drifting past the buzzing Southbank with its luxurious bars and street performers. The next? You’re gliding by the serene Royal Botanic Gardens, a green oasis in the heart of the city hustle.
Don’t forget to pack yourself some bubbles and a cheese board to graze on as you meander along the river though it’s twists and turns and soak up the atmosphere. Remember boating along the Yarra River is a slow pace, so take your time and have fun.
If your purpose for boating along the Yarra River is to wet a line then there are plenty of opportunities. The fish you are likely to encounter are Mullet, Mulloway, Estuary Perch and of course Bream. The Bream can grow to good sizes and will take worms and maggots. The water quality in this area isn’t brilliant so I would err on the side of caution if considering eating these fish.
As day turns to dusk, the city lights bounce off the river’s surface, creating a shimmering spectacle. It’s like Melbourne’s giving you a wink. So, if you fancy an urban and scenic sail, the Yarra is your best bet. It’s not just a river; it’s Melbourne’s pulse. Give it a whirl; you won’t regret it!
French Island National Park
Now, don’t let the name fool you. This isn’t some European getaway but an untouched gem smack in the heart of Victoria’s Western Port. It’s rugged, it’s wild and overwhelmingly Australian.
The coastline is a zigzag of mangroves, sandy shores, and hidden bays. But once you set foot on the island, the real magic begins. Picture vast eucalyptus forests, home to lazy koalas overhead chewing eucalyptus leaves and chattering birdlife.
If you are planning to fish around French Island or Western Port Bay then you will need to be mindful of the strong currents. The fishing is epic and you will likely encounter Whiting , Squid and Flathead all year round and good sized Snapper between October and March.
You can’t drive to French Island and therefore it is only accessible by boat. There are many bush walking and Mountain bike tracks winding through the island. You can make the 9.6km trek to the Pinaccles which stands 60m above the sea level. Once at the peak you can take in the views of Western Port Bay, Phillip Island, the mud flats and the wetlands. If you are up for a bit of an adventure you can camp out at the Fairhaven Camp ground which is located around 5km from the jetty.
But the star of the show is the serenity. The air is fresher, the stars brighter, and the silence? For boaters craving an off-grid experience, French Island is it. If you are lucky you can see Dolphins, the occasional Whale and Seals. Please, as always, take your rubbish with you and leave the area cleaner than when you were there!
