Rent A Boat : A Boat Renters Guide

So you have chosen to rent a boat and you are preparing for your boat hire trip.  Here are some Tips and Tricks to make your boat rental is an awesome experience:-

Check Licensing Requirements:

Depending on your location and the type of boat, you may need a marine license. Ensure you meet all the necessary requirements before booking. There are several companies that offer boat rentals that do not require a Marine licence.  It is important to also make sure that you have the knowledge and experience to operate the boat in the waters you are intending to operate in.

Inspect the Boat:

Before taking possession of the rental boat, thoroughly inspect it for any damage or safety issues. Take note of any pre-existing damage and ensure all safety equipment is onboard and in good condition.  The best way to document the condition of the boat is to take lots of photos or even better a video on your smart phone.

BareBoat Rental:-

If you are renting the boat as a bareboat rental i.e Hire & Drive, then you should also include an inspection of the trailer.  Check all the lights are operating with your vehicle and again photograph or video any damage.

Discuss any damage with the owner at the time to avoid any misunderstandings.   If you are unfamiliar with reversing a trailer check this video out:- How To Launch Your Boat

Safety Briefing:

Ensure you are given a boat safety briefing applicable to the boat you are renting.  Ask lots of questions and you should be given instruction either on land or on the water on how to operate the boat safely.

Understand the boat’s controls, navigation, and safety features.  You should make yourself familiar with the location and use of all safety equipment.  In Australia, the owner of the vessel must also have a Safety Management System (SMS) in place and the document readily accessible for the boat renter.   You should familiarise yourself with this document.

If you are towing the boat to the ramp yourself, then make sure you seek advice from the owner on any specific tips and tricks they have for safely launching and retrieving the vessel.

Weather:

Check the weather forecast for the day of your rental. Avoid boating in adverse weather conditions, as it can be dangerous and spoil your experience.  Not only is it dangerous but it is unlikely your family or friends will have an enjoyable experience.  Make sure you check the cancellation conditions with your boat hire company.

Apps like Windy.app & BOM provide excellent weather forecasts and should be used by all boaters as weather conditions can change quickly.

Navigation Charts and Maps:

If you’re unfamiliar with the area, obtain navigation charts or maps to help you navigate safely. GPS and navigation apps on your smart phone such as Wavve Boating App  can be extremely beneficial and are easy to use.

Bring Essential Supplies:

Pack essentials like sunscreen, towels, food, drinks & Esky, personal first-aid kits/medication, and your marine licence. Don’t forget to bring a fully charged mobile phone, a charger and a waterproof bag to keep it in.  If you have your own personal lifejackets and they are in date and operational bring them along if they are more comfortable.

Pod Of DolphinsFollow Boating Rules and Etiquette:

Abide by local boating regulations, speed limits, and no-wake zones. Be respectful of other boaters, swimmers, and wildlife.

Don’t Booze On:

Operating a boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal.   Not only is it illegal it is extremely dangerous to your friends, family and other boat users.  Lets all do the right thing and avoid alcohol and substances that impair your judgment or coordination while operating a boat.

Plan Ahead:

Plan your boat rental day out and share the route you are planning to take with the boat owner and other family or friends.  If you are boating in Melbourne Victoria then check out Top 11 Places In Victoria To Visit By Boat

Emergency Ready:

Be emergency ready by knowing emergency procedures, including how to use safety equipment, how to use the radio for distress calls, and what to do in case of a fire or other emergency.  Who do you call if the boat breaks down?…. Ask the owner for how they will resolve this issue.

Enjoy Your Boat Rental Day:

Relax and enjoy your boat rental experience responsibly. Take in the scenery, soak up the sun, have fun, and create lasting memories while prioritising safety and responsible behaviour.  Make sure you take lots of photos and share them with family and friends.
